NAME
The name of the organization is
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation.
In Japanese the name of the organization is
Denmāku Dentō Kendō Renmei,
デンマーク伝統剣道連盟
MISSION
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation is responsible for the development and administration of the
classical Japanese disciplines in Denmark. The Federation organizes
respectively
Kendō 剣道 (the way of the sword), Kenjutsu 剣術 (swordsmanship),
Kyūjutsu 弓術 (the art of archery), Sōjutsu
槍術 (the
art of the spear), Naginatajutsu 長刀術
(the
art of the halberd), and
Bajutsu 馬術 (the art of horsemanship).
The purpose is to maintain ko-budō
古武道 and the koryū 古流
structure and its integrity.
The Federation is a non-profit organization. Groups
which are organized in the Federation are not permitted to make any
profit from their teaching nor from exhibitions.
CHARACTERISTICS
All the categories which are mentioned in the 'Mission' existed in
the Edo Period (1603-1868) where discipline and respect
were the core values. Historically the jutsu form have an other
purpose than ko-budo but the common features between the jutsu
form and ko-budo were
discipline and respect.
Historians confirm that there existed
different traditions within the
respectively disciplines prior 1868 (inclusive Kendo).

The Federation distinguishes
between the older samurai traditions in the Edo Period (1603-1868), and the pre-modern initiatives
in the same period where the thrust was towards sport. After the Meiji
Restoration (1868) this modern direction was called shin-budō 新武道. Compared
with shin-budo, the ko-budo is closer to the older samurai traditions concerning theory, method and symbolism.
Generally speaking the Federation recognizes modern disciplines which
include sport, however, the Federation does not organize sport because
sport, according to historians, has no root in relation to the classical
arts and ways of the Japanese martial culture.
RELATIONS
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation is an independent organization
which has international co-operation with like-minded who share the
Federation's interest of preserving the old
samurai traditions. Thus has the Federation engaged in
co-operation with authorities in Japan and the British Kendo Renmei.
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation and its
foreign partners are engaged in historical studies. The purpose of these
studies is to contribute to the knowledge of older Japanese
traditions. The studies are primarily concerned with the time period prior to
1868.
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation encourages respective groups to admit children and young people so they get the
opportunity to become acquainted with the manners within ko-budo. In this
matter the Federation co-operates with 'Børns Vilkår'
(Children Conditions), a humanitarian organization
which works for children's and young's rights in Denmark.
