Vision Statements
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation was founded in 2008 to preserve Kendo (剣道) in its traditional form and not
as competition-orientated Sport.
Kendo in relation to Classical Martial Ways is not practiced in order to destroy the opponent (satsujin-ken) but rather to build one's character (katsujin-ken) through rigid practice.
The entry into the Classical Martial Ways is both a 'separation' (ri) from the modern kendo, and the simultaneous entry or 'defense' (shu) of the traditional ryu. Thus, the concept of shu-ha-ri is practiced among all our students whom strive towards the Classical Martial Ways.
Mission Statements
Danish Traditional Kendo Federation is an independent organization which organizes Kendo from the Tokugawa period (1603-1868).
The purpose is to maintain the structure of Classical Martial Ways and its integrity by deepening the martial study of the Tokugawa period.
Terminology
Budo (武道) consists of to concepts. Bu means 'military affairs, arms, bravery, martial power'
while the concept do (or michi) means 'path' or 'way'. In this way budo can be described as 'Martial Ways'.
Classical Martial Ways are synonymous with 'traditional budo', 'classical budo' and 'ko-budo' (古武道). Classical Martial Ways refer to the time prior to the Meiji Restoration (1868).
Modern Martial Ways are synonymous with 'modern budo' and 'shin-budo'. Shin-budo refers to the time after the Meiji Restoration (1868).
In the Tokugawa period, budo had far broader connotations than it does today but Kendo has ever been a pure 'martial art' but rather a 'martial way'.
